Panchakarma: Purification Therapy

Panchakarma is a unique therapy for prevention, rejuvenation and cure. For prevention and rejuvenation, the therapy is ideally done 3-4 times a year at the cusps between seasons, while for treatment of disease, the therapy is done as needed for periods of a week to over a month. The various treatments of the PK therapy are used for:

  • eliminating impurities and toxins,
  • balancing the physiology,
  • restoring mental balance,
  • invigorating body and mind,
  • preventing disease, and
  • curing chronic disorders.

A Panchakarma rejuvenation program consists of a series of treatments applied in an appropriate order, each day, over a period of several days. These treatments include:

  • Abhyanga (oleation; herbalized whole body massage): the massage, while soothing and relaxing to the nervous system, also acts to mobilize accumulated toxins in the skin and allow for their elimination.
  • Shirodhara (flow of a stream of herbalized oil on the forehead in a specific pattern): a very calming, relaxing treatment for insomnia, stress, and psychosomatic mental disorders.
  • Swedan (herbalized steam bath): this liquefies and loosens ama (sticky, toxic substances resulting from improper digestion of food, environmental pollution and other harmful sources) so that they can be easily eliminated from the body.
  • Nasya (nasal administration of herbalized oils or herbs): used as a preventative and curative for disorders of head, neck and sense organs, e.g., sinus congestion, migraine, headaches etc.
  • Virechana (purgation by herbs): to eliminate toxins and to clean large and small intestines, whose strength and proper functioning is vital for proper nourishment of the physiology.
  • Basti (herbalized enemas): two kinds are used in alternation, one nourishing and the other eliminative.

Some other treatments that are included in the PK rejuvenation program are:

  • Pizachil - Involves two PK technicians who work in unison, simultaneously pouring a stream of herbalized oil and massaging the body. Proven to be very effective in neurological, muscular and joint disorders.
  • Pinda swedan - Herbs prepared in a poultice form and then cooked in herbalized oil to give fomentation on specific parts of the body for relief from back, neck and joint pain and for strengthening muscles and invigorating the nervous system.
  • Therapeutic local Basti - Specific preparations of herbs and oils for eyes, ear, heart, and back. These have purifying, restorative effects.

The benefits of the PK rejuvenation program can be understood in three ways:

  • Purification - the treatments subtly harmonize and build on each others effectiveness, beginning by gently and effectively loosening any metabolic wastes and environmental toxins from tissues, then mobilizing these impurities to where they can be eliminated and finally eliminating them from the body through the "selective permeability" of the mucous membranes of the skin, nose, small intestine, colon, kidney, etc.
  • Relaxing - the treatments enliven the body's own self healing mechanisms, bringing about profound and lasting regeneration of the physiology in a very short time.
  • Balancing - the treatments restores balance in body and mind simultaneously. This rejuvenates and revitalizes the whole individual, providing the basis for increased happiness, vitality, and longevity.
